WHEN RELIGION BECOMES A “Flock of One”: A WARNING ABOUT FALSE SHEPHERDS
The greatest tragedy is not when the world turns against the Church, but when the Church of God becomes a “flock of one” of the world. This happens when the shepherds, out of fear of man, betray the Lord. Instead of standing firm in the spirit of God’s Word, they seek glory, security, and ease by compromising with worldly power.

This is not a new phenomenon. History has recorded the image of the Pharisees, out of fear of the power of the Roman Empire, “clinging” to and colluding with King Herod and the government of Caesar, betraying their own people and their faith. Fear of man is always the path that leads to betrayal of God.

When a religious organization is rotten from within, it leaves clear signs for anyone with eyes to see.

  1. The Carnal Power System
The first and most obvious sign is when the clergy system turns into a monopoly, ruled by man-made rules. These rules are not intended to preserve holiness, but to bind and select those who will submit to the carnal system of the leadership.
In this system, loyalty to the organization is placed above loyalty to God’s Word. Anyone, no matter how righteously they live according to the Bible, who dares to speak out against the wrongdoings of their “carnal flock,” is immediately isolated, slandered, and eliminated.
  2. Using God’s Name for Personal Gain
When power is consolidated, greed will arise. Clergy begin to use their positions for personal gain. They treat the offerings of believers as their own property and do not hesitate to embezzle. Bible history records these terrible examples:
The sons of Eli the priest: They despised the offerings of the Lord, used their power to take the best parts for themselves, and caused the whole people to stumble (1 Samuel 2).
The sons of Gideon: After their father died, they used their influence to cause chaos and power struggles (Judges 8-9).
  3. Spiritual Prisons and Demonic Doctrines
The most dangerous is when that religion opposes the law of grace and freedom in Christ. They turn the church into a spiritual prison, where believers are prisoners chained by fear and guilt, and the clergy are jailors who have the power to judge and dispense forgiveness.
Jesus himself condemned the religious leaders:
“Woe to you… because you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; you yourself do not enter it, and you do not allow those who are trying to enter to enter.” (Matthew 23:13).
“Woe to you… because you travel over sea and earth to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15).
To maintain this prison, they have to distort and “pervert” the truth of the Bible. They create “demonic doctrines,” elaborate teachings that direct people to worship clergy, worship organizations, worship rituals instead of worshiping God alone. The ultimate goal is to bind people to their system, not to liberate people in God’s truth.
A true Christian must always be vigilant, using the Word of God as the yardstick to recognize who is a true shepherd and who is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Do not let fear or gullibility make you a prisoner in any “monopoly” in the name of religion.
