Distinguishing God’s Law of Salvation from the Moral Law of the World
The Apostle Paul once reminded the believers in Thessalonica:
“Do not despise prophecies.” (1 Thessalonians 5:20)
The word “despise” here means to disregard, to take lightly, to not care.
In the context of the New Testament, “prophecy” does not only refer to predictions of the future, but mainly refers to the proclamation of God’s Word, that is, the Bible – the revealed Word given to humanity by the Holy Spirit. As the Apostle Peter confirmed:
“No prophecy of Scripture was ever made by the will of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”
(2 Peter 1:20–21)
Therefore, the prophecies are the living and true Word of God, used for:
“teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.”
(2 Timothy 3:16)
The Difference Between God’s Law and Worldly Moral Law
The world also teaches people what is called morality and ethics – such as distinguishing between good and evil, right and wrong. However, those principles come from humans – who are finite, sinful, and changeable. Therefore, worldly morality often changes according to the times, cultures, and social circumstances.
What was right in the last century may be considered outdated today.
What is respected in one country may be opposed in another.
In contrast, God’s Law is immutable, a solid foundation for defining good and evil, distinguishing truth from falsehood, and guiding life.
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.”
(Isaiah 40:8)
His Word does not change according to politics, culture, or social trends. Therefore, only by living according to God’s gracious Law can people truly know the truth, be free, and be saved.
A Prayer to God
Dear Father,
May our hearts always love Your law.
May we delight in Your commandments,
know what is good, and avoid all evil, even what is like evil.
“Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
(1 Corinthians 10:31)
Keep us from evil, Father, and guide us in the paths of righteousness.
Let Your word be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
