Loving God With All Your Heart – A Call to Return to the One

Loving God With All Your Heart – A Call to Return to the One (Mark 12:28–44)

  1. The Greatest Commandment – The Heart of Faith

When a teacher of the law asked Jesus which commandment was the greatest, He replied:

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:29–30)

The quote from Deuteronomy 6:4–5 reminds us that God is not one of many gods, He is the only One, the Almighty, the True God.

“There is no other besides me.” (Deuteronomy 32:39)

  1. Love of God – Indivisible

God does not require just one part, but all: heart – soul – mind – strength.

Loving God is not a superficial feeling, but a living commitment, a committed mind, a faithful will and a devoted action.

This is also confirmed in John 17:3:

“This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

  1. Love of Neighbor – Inseparable from Love of God

Jesus added:

“The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31)

Love of God always goes hand in hand with love of people. Those who truly love God will live in forgiveness, sharing, and humility.

  1. The Example of the Widow – Giving Everything to God

At the end of the passage, Jesus sat near the collection box and saw a poor widow giving two small coins. Jesus said:

“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who have put in the money box.” (Mark 12:43)

The woman did not give according to the amount, but according to her heart – she gave her whole life, her hope, and her faith.

  1. From One God to Total Giving

From the command to love God with all your heart to the widow’s act of giving, we see a complete picture of true faith:

Believing that there is only one God

Knowing Him through Jesus Christ

Loving and giving to Him with all your heart

Living out practical love for those around you

  1. Living with Strong Faith

“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

We are not called to practice our faith in fear, but to live a life of commitment in the light, with love for God, like the widow – giving all that we have, even if it is only a little.

Conclusion

Are we loving God today with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength?
Do we love, give, and trust God like the poor widow?

“Love the Lord your God” – this is the first and greatest commandment. (Matthew 22:37–38)
