Atheism from the Beginning: A Biblical Perspective
The concept of atheism, or the denial of God’s existence, is not a new phenomenon. The Bible has mentioned people with this mindset since ancient times. Psalm 53, similar to Psalm 14 of King David, describes this clearly:
Psalm 53:1-3
“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God,’ They are corrupt, they have committed abominable iniquity; there is none who does good. God looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there were any who understood, who sought God. ‘Each of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.'”
This passage shows that, from the very beginning, there were people who rejected God in their hearts, leading to moral decay and evil behavior.
Two Forms of Atheism
Atheism can be classified into two main forms, both of which represent a separation from God, albeit in different forms:
- Atheistic Atheists
These are people who do not believe in God, and although their minds deny His existence, their conscience still feels something supernatural. Especially when facing death or moments of despair, the fear of an uncertain future, the insecurity in their hearts is evidence that their conscience is telling them about a Supreme Being.
A typical example is the 19th century philosopher Voltaire. When he was alive, he was famous for his arrogant words, denying God. However, in the last months of his life on his deathbed, he constantly cried out because of the fear of an uncertain eternity that he was about to face. This shows the conflict between reason and the deep feelings of conscience.
- The Atheist
This is a paradox, but it is a common reality in the community of believers, including those who have been born again. Although they have accepted God in their hearts, in their daily lives, their minds forget His presence. They live entirely according to their natural instincts, their material desires, without thinking about God.
They are like ostriches, believing that if they bury their heads in the sand, no one will see them. Many believers, even those who are called “servants of God”, are so concerned with the money of the Church, the power they hold, that they forget about God. They live like atheists, fearlessly committing evil acts such as oppressing their colleagues, corruption, or abusing their power in the house of God.
In conclusion, whether it is an open denial or a life of indifference, atheism is a dangerous attitude. The Bible shows us that, from the very beginning, man has tended to drift away from God, and that only when we recognize and live in His presence can we find true meaning and avoid depravity.
