The Spirit of Antichrist Is at Work, and Many Don’t Realize It
When most people think of the Antichrist, they picture someone who will force the world to bear the mark of the beast, as described in Revelation 13 and 17. However, we need to distinguish between two aspects: the spirit of the Antichrist and the person of the Antichrist. The spirit of the Antichrist is an invisible influence that infiltrates the thinking of the world, opposing Jesus and his teachings. The person of the Antichrist will be a specific individual who will appear in the end times as a false Messiah, a world leader who will deceive many with false signs and wonders, promote a false religion, and persecute Christians.
Although the individual Antichrist has not yet appeared, the spirit of the Antichrist is already at work among us, through the deception of the devil. One of the ways this spirit enters the Church is through what we call the spirit of religion.
What is the spirit of religion?
The spirit of religion is an evil influence that seeks to replace a genuine relationship with God with religious systems and traditions. It is an extremely effective tool of the devil against God’s children, because it is often cleverly disguised, easily infiltrating the body of Christ without being detected. That is why the Bible calls us to test all spirits. If we are not careful, we can easily mistake those who manifest this spirit as part of the body of Christ, when in fact they are not.
The first thing this spirit brings is false teachings, leading people away from biblical truth and teaching demonic teachings. For example, instead of encouraging prayer and faith in Jesus Christ, they preach the practice of channeling or other forms of spiritual healing. Sometimes these teachings are called “new age.” They will even advise you to pray using items like salt or write your name on Bible passages for spiritual protection. They will ask you to do specific things to attract Mammon (the god of wealth) or take baths to purify your soul.
These practices are often combined with the Bible, making them seem biblical, but they are all deceptive tactics. They will try to turn prayers into magical rituals, making you believe that if you combine biblical elements with other spiritual practices, you will get the desired results. This is essentially another form of magic.
It is important to understand that prayers should never be turned into rituals or spells. Writing your name between the pages of the Bible will not stop demons from attacking you. In fact, the more you do it, the more demons will become provoked, because they know what you are doing is not biblical. Even when Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, Satan was able to approach Him and converse with Him without fear. So the devil has nothing to fear when you practice unbiblical practices. The devil has nothing to fear if your faith is not rooted in Jesus. Whether you pray with salt or drink water from the Jordan River, none of these things threaten the enemy except Jesus.
Jesus is the ultimate source of protection
The truth is that Jesus is your ultimate source of protection, and He brings us safety through the Holy Spirit of God. Anyone who encourages you to engage in such practices is essentially placing you in a form of religious slavery.
In Galatians 5:1, Paul says, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
In Colossians 2:20-23, Paul warns, “If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as though you were still living in the world, do you submit to these rules, ‘Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch’? All these things perish with use, according to human commandments and doctrines, which, although they have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed worship and humbleness and severe treatment of the body, are of no value against the passions of the flesh.” In this passage, he warns against following man-made rules and regulations, which may appear religious but lack spiritual value. The truth is found only in Christ.
Sometimes, you may be persuaded to follow these instructions out of ignorance. But as you grow in faith and God begins to open your eyes, there are certain practices that you will begin to stay away from, because the Spirit will tell you that they are not of God.
The purpose of the antichrist spirit is to take your focus off of Jesus and start placing it on everything that is false. The more you follow their teachings, the more trouble you will get into. The Bible tells us that God lives within us, not in objects made by human hands. This means that God’s divine protection for your life comes primarily from His Spirit within you, not from objects like salt or water. When you rely on external objects for protection, you are essentially taking your focus off of Jesus and placing your trust in those objects, which will eventually become idols. Only the name and blood of Jesus can protect you.
The Subtle Deception of the Antichrist Spirit
This is why the Bible tells us that the Spirit of Jesus (1 John 4:3), the Antichrist, has entered the world. You need to know that “Antichrist” does not necessarily mean someone who is against Christ, but it also means someone who does not follow the teachings of Jesus. The most interesting thing is that some people who operate under such religious spirits actually do these things in the belief that they are serving God. The Antichrist spirit will first deceive its followers, before using them to deceive others. This means that some people will operate under this spirit without even realizing that they are being used by the enemy. You should be very careful, because in their view, they are using the Bible to carry out these activities, and so they feel that just because they are using the Bible, it basically means that whatever they are doing is of God. What they are doing is what the Bible calls the doctrine of demons. These people are doing their actions with deep conviction because they think they are actually serving God. This is why Jesus said in John 16:2, “They will put you out of the synagogues; and the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is doing God a service.”
So when you try to point out the contradictions between their actions and the Bible, they may feel offended, because to them their practices are in line with the Bible. You may wonder why there is a problem if they are using the Bible. That is a fair question. However, the problem is not the act of praying, but the real concern is the spirit behind these actions. The devil is very sneaky. He will not necessarily tell you to stop praying or reading the Bible. No, he will only try to prevent or misunderstand the Bible, or misunderstand when you study the Bible.
Be careful, you will find that whenever Satan tries to tempt or mislead anyone, he always approaches them using the words of God that you read often in the Bible. He has taken a part of the passage or he has taken it out of context to confuse the reader for his purpose of deception. When he tempted Eve in the garden, he asked her and used the words of God. When he tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he used the words of God. When he tried to mislead Paul through a servant girl who was possessed by a spirit of divination, she also used the words of God.
The devil knows that as a child of God, if he speaks to you through the Bible, you will be more likely to believe him. So he and his minions approach you with a facade of godliness and deny its power. But because people are desperate, they tend to follow these types of teachings, thinking they are from God. This leads you to believe that you need more than just Jesus to protect you.
Jesus specifically warned us about this in Mark 7:3 by saying, “For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding the tradition of the elders.” Paul echoes this by advising us to beware of the vain philosophies and doctrines of demons. He warns that no one will deceive you, nor will the elementary things of the world force you to obey.
As we walk in our spirituality, we must be careful never to follow blind teachings disguised as the teachings of the Bible. You must not put your trust in objects or rituals, but in Jesus Christ alone. We must resist the temptation to stray from the path that God has laid out for us in His word.
