Taming the Tongue

Taming the Tongue: Man’s Most Difficult Battle
Modern science has made incredible progress in understanding and treating the human body. X-rays allow us to see inside, medicine can transplant kidneys or hearts, and we can replace teeth with dentures. However, there is one particular part that science has yet to “conquer” or replace: the tongue.

Unlike limbs that can get tired, the tongue seems to never know exhaustion. Even when we grow old and need dentures, the tongue remains intact as when we were born. This shows its uniqueness and special power.

The Power of Words: A Warning from the Bible
Since ancient times, people have recognized the importance of controlling the tongue. Proverbs such as “Keep your tongue between your teeth” or “Think twice before you speak once” have become guiding principles for many people. The English sayings, “Keep your tongue like a prisoner and your body will be free,” and “A long tongue shortens friendships,” emphasize the consequences of not controlling your speech.

Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:36-37 are a profound warning: “But I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” This shows that every word we speak carries great weight, which can lead to either righteousness or condemnation.

The Bible also mentions different types of tongues, reflecting the diverse nature of human speech:

A flattering tongue (Psalm 5:9)

A boasting tongue (Psalm 12:3, 73:9)

A lying tongue (Psalm 109:2, Proverbs 6:17)

A deceitful tongue (Psalm 120:2)

A perverse tongue (Proverbs 10:31, 17:20)

A gentle tongue (Proverbs 15:4)

A healing tongue (Proverbs 12:18)

A malicious tongue (Proverbs 17:4)

A wicked and deceitful tongue (Psalm 10:7)

A gentle tongue (Proverbs 25:15)

A backbiting tongue (Proverbs 12:18)

A malicious tongue (Proverbs 17:4)

A backbiting tongue (Proverbs 12:18)

The Tongue: An Uncontrollable Fire
James, in his letter (James 3:2-12), compared the tongue to a “fire,” a “world of evil” with tremendous destructive power:

A small force with great impact: Just as a small bit can control a large horse, or a small rudder can steer a huge ship, so the small tongue has the power to “boast of great things.”

A destructive fire: A small spark can burn down a vast forest, and so can the tongue. It has the power to “defile the whole body, set on fire the course of life, and be set on fire by hell.”

The source of the contradiction: James highlights the paradox of using the same tongue to bless God the Father and to curse people, creatures made in His image. “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing? Not so, my brothers.”

The Powerlessness of Man Before the Tongue
Today’s man has achieved great things. We have conquered space, explored the ocean floor, harnessed wind and water to create energy. We have transmitted our voices around the world via satellite. Man has incredible power over the natural world.

However, despite all these achievements, man has not been able to conquer his own tongue. The tongue is still an “uncontrollable evil, full of deadly poison.”

This shows that, no matter how much science and technology develop, man’s greatest challenge is not to conquer the outside world, but to control himself, especially his speech. To control the tongue, we need a power beyond human capacity, a transformation from within.

Do you agree that mastering your words is one of life’s greatest challenges?
