THE TEN COMMANDMENTS – WHAT MUST MAN KEEP TO BE SAVED
INTRODUCTION: The Ten Commandments are ten laws given by God to the Israelites after they left Egypt (Exodus 20:1–17; Deuteronomy 5:6–21). These ten commandments summarize all 613 laws in the Old and New Testaments. The first four deal with the relationship with God, the last six with the relationship with man. This is not just a moral law, but a Law of Faith in the One Saving Grace.
- You shall have no other gods before Me.
No other God can save the soul:
“There is salvation in no one else…” (Acts 4:12) “I am the First and the Last, and besides Me there is no other.” (Isaiah 44:6)
- You shall not make an idol… to worship.
No material image is worthy of being worshiped in place of the Eternal One. Such an act is an insult to the Savior of God and also a humiliation of your own dignity as a person who bears the image of God.
- You shall not use the name of God in vain.
The name of God is life:
“Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) “His name is above every name.” (Philippians 2:9–10)
- Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy.
A day set aside for rest and communion with God, a time to lift up the spirit to the Creator.
- Honor your father and mother.
Being grateful to your parents is a vivid image of being grateful to God:
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)
- You shall not murder.
Human life is sacred, created in the image of God.
- You shall not commit adultery.
God values marriage and fidelity.
- You shall not steal.
Respect for other people’s property is a principle of justice and love.
- You shall not bear false witness.
God is Truth, and He calls His people to live in truth.
- You shall not covet…
Covetousness is the root of other sins such as theft, murder, and adultery. This is a commandment that targets the root in the heart.
- The Ten Commandments – Not for Self-Saving, but for Recognizing the Need for Salvation
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) “There is no one who does good, not even one.” (Ecclesiastes 7:20)
The Ten Commandments help people recognize themselves as sinners – unable to save themselves by works, but needing faith in Jesus Christ:
“The law is our guide to Christ, that we may be justified by faith.” (Galatians 3:24)
CONCLUSION: KEEPING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS – IS LIVING IN SALVATION
✅ The Ten Commandments do not save the soul – but they reveal the need for a Savior.
✅ Whoever truly believes in God will love His Law and live according to His commandments.
✅ Keeping the commandments is not a way to be saved – but a proof of living faith.
“For by grace you have been saved, through faith… it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
