Why God’s People Cannot Be Cursed
In my years of living, I have seen curses as one of the most destructive forces. Many people have been affected by them. However, there is a special group of people who cannot be cursed, and you may be one of them. If someone has ever cursed you and made you afraid, do not panic. This article will explain how curses work and what you should do when faced with them.
So, what is a curse? It is a negative word directed at you to bring bad luck or misfortune. The Bible, especially the Old Testament, mentions a lot about curses. Nowadays, many people have the habit of cursing when they are angry or do not like someone. But I can assure you, most of these curses will never work on you.
Three Elements for a Curse to Work
For a curse to work, three main elements must be present:
Legal basis: There must be a valid reason for the curse to work.
Spiritual authority: The person casting the curse must have spiritual authority over you.
Victim’s belief: You, the person being cursed, must believe in the power of the curse.
Consider the example of Reuben in Genesis 49:3-4. He was cursed by his father, Jacob, for sleeping with his father’s concubine, an act of extreme disrespect. The curse was effective because Reuben had sinned, and Jacob, as a father and a prophet, had the authority to judge. Reuben’s sin created the “legal basis” for the curse.
Protection Under the New Covenant
However, in the New Testament, as a born-again child of God, you cannot be cursed. You are under a new covenant. Anyone who curses you has no authority, because you are covered by the seal and protection of Jesus Christ. To curse you, that person would have to have more authority than Jesus, and that is impossible.
Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.’”
So whenever someone curses, God turns it into a blessing for you. Curses can only affect those who are not of God, because they do not have this protection.
Romans 8:31-34 affirms, “If God is for us, who can be against us?… Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus who died—yes, more than that, was raised—is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.”
This means that no words can harm you. When someone curses, the devil can use those negative words to attack. But because you are a child of God, He will use His supreme authority to destroy them.
When God’s People Mistake
While God’s people are protected, this does not mean that God’s people can hurt others without suffering consequences. For example, if a man deceives a woman, gets her pregnant, and then abandons her, the woman’s pain can lead to bitter words. The man’s sinful actions created a “legal basis” that allowed his enemies to attack him. The distress in this case did not come from the curse, but from his placing himself outside of God’s will. To be free, he must repent, make amends, and take responsibility.
Isaiah 49:24 says, “The spoils of the violent, who can recover? The righteous taken captive, who can rescue?”
Being a child of God does not give you the right to harm others. The power of the curse comes from sin. If you have done wrong, make amends.
What to Do When You Are Cursed?
You do not need to fear curses without cause.
Proverbs 26:2 says, “As a sparrow flies here and there, and as a swallow flies away, so a curse without cause will not come.”
However, do not remain silent. Silence can be seen as consent in the spiritual realm. God expects you to use your words to counteract negativity.
Declare the Word: Be bold in reversing curses with the Word of God. If someone says you will die soon, proclaim Psalm 118:17: “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.” Stand firm in the promises of Isaiah 54:17 and Deuteronomy 28.
Use authority: Use the authority of Jesus’ name to break and nullify curses. Command evil forces to be silent.
Forgive and bless: If the curser is someone you know, forgive and bless them.
Do not fear: Fear is what gives power to curses. Trust in God rather than in the words of men.
Remember, Moses used his higher authority to reverse the curse that Jacob placed on Reuben. Likewise, you have authority in Christ to overcome every curse.
